On June 9 and 10 EMUFT will hold meetings to vote for two EMUFT delegates to attend the AFT National Convention, and to discuss the new pay schedule affecting our part time lecturers.
The convention will be in Los Angeles, July 11-13. Please send your delegate Nominations to emuft9102@gmail.com. Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday, June 6th. We will vote for delegates at the meetings. We had originally planned not to send delegates to the convention; however, our local will be featured in the keynote address by AFT national president Randi Weingarten. At the state convention, she was very impressed with our organizing efforts on campus and work we are doing in the community through the Washtenaw Regional Organizing Coalition.
We will also discuss the pay schedule change that is now affecting part-time lecturers across campus, and talk about what we can do in response. (See more info on this below.)
All meetings will be in 217 Pray Harrold; you need only come to one:
Monday 6/9 4-5 PM
Monday 6/9 7-8 PM
Tuesday 6/10 11 AM - 12 PM
Tuesday 6/10 4-5 PM
Part-time lecturers teaching summer semesters are now on the new pay schedule. Instead of receiving the first check for the semester in the middle of the month, PTLs now have to wait until the end of the month for a check. In the fall, the first paycheck for the semester that used to arrive on Sept. 15, won’t come until Sept. 30. This will again happen in the winter, when PTLs won’t be paid until Jan. 31. The email from Academic Human Resources states:
“Beginning with the Summer 2014 semester the University plans to begin paying Part-Time Lecturers in equal, semi-monthly payments during the entire term of employment. This is a change to the payment schedule only. Your compensation for the semester will not change.
“Thus, instead of the first payment occurring on the initial pay date of the term (e.g., 15 January for the winter semester), the first pay will be on the second pay period of the term (e.g., 31 January for the winter semester). This action is designed to reduce compensation errors and avoid unnecessary fluctuations in pay.”
Please come to share your ideas and help make EMU a better workplace for all lecturers.
