EMU Proposes Pay Cut, Reduced Job Security

The Eastern Michigan University administration has proposed a 25% pay cut for new lecturers, and a pay freeze for current lecturers. New lecturers would have to teach for 5+ years before they would earn the amount that lecturers make today.

The administration’s proposal also eliminates promotions and the small amount of job security this provides, and demotes lecturers who have already been promoted. Part-time lecturers would earn less than half of what full-time lecturers earn per credit.

The administration's proposal would:
Incentivize departments cutting courses for current lecturers to give courses to new, lower paid teachers,

·         Make it harder for EMU to recruit qualified, quality teachers,
Force lecturers to teach classes at other colleges and universities,

·         Place EMU among the lowest paying universities in Michigan,

·         Place EMU lecturers among the lowest paid higher ed instructional staff in Michigan,
And ultimately, degrade the quality of education provided to our students.

·         This is an insulting and embarrassing move on the part of the administration. However, we will not be distracted or defeated. Our demand remains—equal pay for equal instruction.
